One of the oldest forms of online marketing is the newsletter. Established internet marketers know the tremendous value of newsletters. First let’s clarify, who are these newsletter sending internet marketers? They are anyone who markets a product or service online. It’s that simple. From Affiliate Marketing; those who sell other peoples products or services and receive commissions for doing so, to Dog Trainers, to Information Marketers who sell information products to teach others ‘How to’ do a variety of things from html coding to scrapbooking, in a nutshell, anyone who does business online.

OK, you are new to all this, why would you want to go to all the trouble and extra work of writing a weekly or bi-weekly newsletter? What’s it going to do for your business? Will the effort be worth the return? The answer is yes, absolutely yes! A newsletter keeps you connected with your subscribers. It builds a relationship with them and helps you establish credibility. You will see that you have built trust with your clients and subscribers. It show’s them that everything from you doesn’t have to be a sales pitch. That doesn’t mean that you can’t throw in a related product or service for sale, just don’t make it all about the pitch. You want them to get used to seeing emails from you that don’t require their credit card. If ‘pitch’ emails are all you send, your subscriber will tune you out, delete before reading or unsubscribe altogether. That defeats the purpose. It also helps you build your brand.

Your readers become familiar with and recognize your branding. With a call to action like “Share this to 3 of your friends who also like___” -or- “If you found this information valuable please sent it to a friend”, then your branding is being distributed to others as well, which also helps you to increase your list.

Writing is not your forte’? It doesn’t have to be a lengthy newsletter. It can be about a ‘tip of the week’, ‘just wanted you to know’, ‘a special offer or bonus just for you’ or ‘thanks for being a valued customer’. Newsletters build a relationship with your reader. They feel like they are part of a community, like they know you a little. This in turn creates responsiveness. Responsiveness creates sales.

How should you format your newsletter; Text or HTML? Plain text is the easiest. If you can type an email, you can send a plain text newsletter. Text tends to get through the spam filters a bit easier, which is also plus. Maybe you feel unfamiliar with technology or feel like you should have an awesome newsletter design, auto responders such as AWeber provide a variety of good looking newsletter templates and automatically send your emails to your list for you at a cost even a beginner can afford. The cons of text are that you can’t use graphics, photos or logos in plain text. They are not as attractive and you can’t send clickable links in text newsletters. Clickable links result in more response and conversions.

HTML is short for Hyper Text Markup Language, the authoring language used to create documents on the World Wide Web. When you use HTML it makes the mail and websites you design more attractive. HTML newsletters are more appealing to the eye as well as enable consistent branding, i.e. the logo, graphics, color, photos, etc. that you use to represent your company. Another plus for HTML is clickable links. It is so much easier to click a link that takes you directly to the product, web page or offer, and you are much more likely to click that link than to copy and paste or type the address in the address bar. People tend to look for the easiest way.
